Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1937, Kane often mused that he actually was born on a clove of garlic and herbs de Provence along the Riviera. His subject matter would back up that statement since his oils are of the Mediterranean area. He painted with watercolor on location and then created his oils back in his New York studio.

Kane came to our attention in 1987 at the suggestion of Will Barnet. Barnet has had thousands of students since the early 1950s and yet Kane was the only one he ever recommended to join him as a gallery artist at this gallery, the gallery he has been associated with since 1970.

Bob Kane enjoyed many successful solo exhibitions including four from 1968 to 1964 at the Bertha Schaefer Gallery in New York City and several at the Hollis-Taggart Gallery in New York City during the past ten years. He also developed a following in Los Angeles with five exhibitions at the Ankrum Gallery from 1969 to 1986. His most consistent following came via the annual exhibitions he had at the Harmon-Meek Gallery in Naples, Florida, starting in 1989. Kane also had solo exhibitions at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio in 1995 and the Musee de St.Paul de Vence, France in 1974 and 1990. His works are included in more than thirty museum permanent collections, the most recent inclusions were in 2011 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and in 2012 at the Orlando Museum of Art (FL).

Quotes from others:

"The very first time I saw Bob Kane's work I recognized his unique talent. His painting had an energy and an explosive force. This combined with an underlined passion for nature in all its elements has dominated his work throughout his career. His most recent work is informed by an inspired vision of a past world in renewal. The viewer’s eye is delighted by new found aspects of classic themes. As always his brush strokes take wing to produce this visionary life utilizing colors that are both rich and unexpected."
--Will Barnet (1911-2012) (quote from 1994)

"Joe Hirshhorn introduced me to Bob Kane's work in the early sixties. Joe was expanding his art collection and I was starting mine. Kane’s paintings reflect his love of Italy, France, and Spain as he returns each year to portray intimate scenes of everyday activity. Vibrant, warm colors dominate his palette, as they display his love for life, people, and friendly places. Capturing scenes of local color most people might miss, his titles reflect his eye for diverse interest."
--Olga Hirshhorn (quote from 2000)

"I am permanently indebted to you for all the gaiety you have brought to our house"
--Audrey Hepburn (quote from 1974)
